A decade ago, buying a mattress meant a Saturday at the showroom, lying down for thirty awkward seconds while a salesperson hovered. Now most of the best brands ship a mattress to your door in a box. So which one actually saves you money, and which one is worth the trip?
The case for buying online
Mattress-in-a-box brands skip the showroom, the floor staff, and the commissioned sales pitch, and they pass a lot of that savings on to you. The same quality of bed often costs noticeably less online than an equivalent in a store.
The other big advantage is the sleep trial. Instead of judging a mattress in a few minutes under fluorescent lights, you get to sleep on it at home for a hundred nights or more. If it's wrong, you send it back, usually for free. That's a far better test than any showroom can offer.
Where the showroom still wins
The showroom isn't useless. If you genuinely don't know what firmness you like, lying on a dozen beds in an afternoon is a fast way to learn. It also helps if you want your new mattress today rather than in a week, or if you'd rather not wrestle a heavy box up the stairs and wait for it to expand.
Some shoppers also just feel better buying something this important in person. There's nothing wrong with that, as long as you don't let a good salesperson talk you into more bed than you need.
The hidden costs to watch
Both paths have fine print. In a store, watch for pushy upsells on frames, protectors, and extended warranties you may not need. Online, check that returns are actually free and that the brand picks up the old mattress or tells you how to recycle it. A "risk-free trial" isn't risk-free if you're stuck paying to ship a queen back across the country.
Which to choose
For most people, online wins on price and convenience, and the long sleep trial removes most of the risk that used to make shopping in person feel safer. Buy in a showroom if you truly need to feel a bed first or you need it immediately.
